NASAL SNUFF CAME FIRST

Nicotine pouches have long been linked to Scandinavian culture, with their origins tracing back to nasal snuff—a powdered tobacco product first used by Native Americans, who would blow it into their noses.

This method of nicotine consumption spread across Central America and, by 1559, was introduced to France by ambassador Jean Nicot. From there, it made its way across Europe, eventually reaching Sweden in the 17th century.

Traditionally, nasal snuff was consumed by placing a small amount on the back of the hand and inhaling it through the nose. It came in various textures, including finely ground dry versions and blends mixed with glucose and herbs.

THEN CAME SNUS

By the 18th century, Swedish producers developed an oral version of snuff that could be placed under the lip. This became known as smokeless tobacco or “snus” (pronounced “snoose”) and offered a more convenient way to consume nicotine.

Snus typically came in two forms—brown and white. Brown snus had water added during production, which reacted with the tobacco and gave it a darker colour. White snus remained dry and colourless due to the absence of added water.

SNUS WAS BANNED IN 1992

In 1992, the European Union introduced a ban on snus across member states. Sweden, however, was granted an exemption when it joined the EU in 1995. While snus can still be produced and sold in Sweden, it cannot be exported to other EU countries.

A TOBACCO-FREE POUCH

Today, the influence of snus continues to shape nicotine products globally. New versions have emerged, including VELO nicotine pouches, which are inspired by snus but contain no tobacco*. VELO pouches are legal to sell in most EU countries and offer a modern, smoke-free alternative.

HOW HAVE PREVIOUS ORAL NICOTINE PRODUCTS INFLUENCED VELO?

VELO nicotine pouches, like those before them, are consumed orally. They’re consumed by tucking a pouch between your upper lip and gum. It’s a hassle-free approach for long lasting nicotine enjoyment.
