Nicotine pouches are a tobacco and smoke-free alternative to smoking that are placed in the mouth under the upper lip. Many users often report a ‘tingling’ or ‘burning’ sensation during use, which can be uncomfortable for some. In this article, we’ll explore what causes these sensations and tips for managing them.

Is it normal for a nicotine pouch to burn?

While some people don’t mind it and others find it uncomfortable, that ‘burning’ or ‘tingling’ sensation you feel when using a nicotine pouch is completely normal. Each user will experience these sensations differently depending on a range of factors including general oral health and the ingredients and flavourings that are used. However, it should never feel too uncomfortable, and, if it does, it could be a sign that the strength is too high or you need to switch flavours.

What causes that burning or tingling sensation?

There are a few reasons why nicotine pouches often have a noticeable ‘burn’ or ‘tingle’ when you first use them:

Nicotine

When nicotine comes into contact with the sensitive membrane tissue and nerves in the mouth, it can create sensations like tingling. This is because nicotine can stimulate nerves in the mucous membrane of the mouth that are responsible for detecting things like pain and temperature.

pH Levels

Nicotine needs be slightly alkaline to be absorbed efficiently when using pouches. However, our mouths tend to be neutral to slightly acidic (pH 6-7) depending on the individual. Nicotine pouches typically include ingredients, called buffers, which create a slightly alkaline environment (pH 8-9) by adjusting the pH of saliva when it mixes with nicotine and the buffering ingredient. These ingredients are commonly used in foods and drinks and are tested by scientists to ensure that they do not cause irritation in the mouth.

Flavourings and Additives

Flavorings and other ingredients that are added can also contribute sensations you may not be accustomed to. For example, ingredients like menthol provide a cooling sensation, this can be perceived as ‘burning’ by some users.

Sensitivity to nicotine pouches varies from person to person. Some users might find sensations mild or pleasant, while others may experience them as uncomfortable. There are a few things you can do to lessen any uncomfortable sensations, such as:

  • Lower nicotine strengths: If you’re experienced any feelings of discomfort, try switching to a lower strength
  • Switch flavour: Some flavours just won’t agree with you. If this is the case, try using another flavour to see if you still experience the same sensations.
